Wimbledon area guide

Although Wimbledon tends to mainly conjure up images of tennis and the Wombles, there’s far more to this historic, thriving town than that. It in fact dates right back to the Iron Age, and there’s even the ruins of a historic village on Wimbledon Common still remaining. In addition, you can also find several properties here that are as old as the 16th century, when Wimbledon was home to royalty. Plus there’s a fascinating windmill from the 19thcentury, harking back to the town’s industrial era, bringing a notable feel of history and culture that’s hard to miss.

With beautiful Wimbledon and Richmond Parks nearby, alongside the wild and iconic Wimbledon Common and the village perched on top of the hill, it almost feels well away from the bustle and throng of London all together.

The area is roughly divided into two parts, with the vibrant town and train station on one end, and the village on the other side. Between them, they offer all the practical amenities tourists and residents could need, along with a slightly quieter, more country style life with plenty of open space, traditional pubs and boutique shops. Particularly appealing to families, Wimbledon is also very popular with commuters as central London can be reached in just half an hour.

Fact File

  • Wimbledon is the world’s oldest tennis tournament, set up in 1877 at the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club.
  • Wimbledon has been a commuter town since way before trains and the London Underground. During the first part of the 18th century, the Dog & Fox inn was a popular stop off on the London to Portsmouth stagecoach route. There is in fact a riding school still there, in the same place that horses used to be stabled.
  • The windmill on Wimbledon Common is now a public museum where visitors can explore and learn all about the local history. There is also a shop where books, postcards, souvenirs and even The Wombles can be purchased as gifts.

Local Amenities

  • Opened in 1880, the elegant Wimbledon Free Public Library was saved from redevelopment in 2013 thanks to strong local opposition and campaigning. Alongside its special collections of French, South Asian, German, Polish, Spanish and Italian books, it also offers taster sessions in fitness, IT and crafts.
  • The Broadway boasts an Odeon Imax showing all the latest blockbusters, plus an HMV Curzon showing more arthouse style films.
  • People living in Wimbledon have the pick of two Waitrose stores as well as a Mark & Spencer Food Hall, a Morrisons and two Sainsbury’s.

Education

Wimbledon boasts a large selection of schools including nursery and primary, with a range of state secondary schools and sixth form colleges, and an academy specialising in sciences and performing arts. There is a higher than average number of private schools here, including the prestigious King’s College School, which serves boys aged from 7-18 in addition to a co-ed sixth form, plus there’s the Norwegian School. Wimbledon High School also welcomes both primary and secondary age girls.
